This document outlines critical considerations for mitigating the threat posed by small-unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), particularly first-person view (FPV) drones, based on observations from the conflict in Ukraine. The increasing use of sUAS for reconnaissance, strike, and electronic warfare necessitates a comprehensive approach to counter sUAS operations.
Key areas covered include: recon drone identification and tracking, the capabilities of FPV drones (ranging from ISR to bombing roles), and the importance of electronic warfare (EW) in disrupting sUAS command and control. Effective detection methods and defeat strategies – including kinetic and EW approaches – are discussed.
Emphasis is placed on unit training, camouflage and concealment techniques to reduce visual and thermal signatures, and the need to rehearse ‘react to UAS’ battle drills. Lessons learned highlight the importance of addressing the kinetic threat of strike/bomber drones and incorporating realistic sUAS scenarios into training exercises. Understanding the range and capabilities of various drone types is vital for effective planning.
